The medium-sized parish of Cockpen includes the communities of Bonnyrigg and Lasswade. It also includes what is left of Prestonholm, a thriving flax-processing community of up to 300 inhabitants until a devastating fire in 1867. Dalhousie Castle Hotel, once the seat of the Ramsay family – powerful in British government – is also sited within the parish. Today, Cockpen Church is the centre of a ‘linked’ parish, serving the congregations of Carrington, Lasswade and Rosewell.
