Just south of Edinburgh’s city boundary is a group of villages and farms that form the parish of Newton. For more than 200 years, the area made its living from coal but, following the demise of the collieries, most of the smaller villages have disappeared or been engulfed by expanding neighbours. Only the dormitories of Newton, Danderhall, Millerhill and Old Craighall remain, although there are plans for a major commercial and residential development that will cover most of the north-west part of the parish.
